Starting therapy is a brave and important step. Whether you’re looking for support around anxiety, relationships, trauma, grief, identity, or general well-being, finding the right therapist matters. At Gina King & Associates, we believe in making mental health care approachable and empowering from the very beginning. This guide is here to help you take informed, confident steps toward finding a therapist who truly fits your needs.
1. Understand Your Coverage and Financial Options
Before booking your first session, it’s helpful to explore what your insurance or workplace benefits will cover. Knowing what to expect financially can reduce stress and help guide your search.
We recommend checking:
How many sessions per year are covered?
Is a referral required?
Which therapist designations are eligible for coverage (e.g., Registered Social Workers, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, or Registered Psychotherapists)?
Does your plan cover virtual sessions or out-of-network providers?
At Gina King & Associates, many of our clinicians are Registered Social Workers (RSWs), which means we are covered by most insurance plans. We also offer receipts for reimbursement.
2. Use Reliable, Professional Sources
Once you're ready to begin your search, start with trustworthy resources:
Online directories such as Psychology Today allow you to filter by specialization, location, gender, language, and therapeutic approach.
Personal referrals from a physician, friend, or colleague can also be helpful. If someone you trust had a positive experience, that can be a great place to start.

3. Confirm Credentials and Areas of Specialization
In Ontario, therapists must be regulated by a professional college. At Gina King & Associates, all of our therapists are registered and in good standing with their respective colleges, such as:
The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
Each member of our team has a specific area of focus, whether it's trauma-informed therapy, couples counselling, parenting support, identity exploration, or managing stress and burnout. You can view our team bios online to learn more.
4. Consider Local and Community Resources
You may already have access to support through:
Student services: Post-secondary schools often offer free or low-cost counselling.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): Many workplaces offer short-term counselling through EAPs. Ask your HR team what’s available.
Specialized organizations: If you are navigating grief, trauma, domestic violence, or identity-specific concerns, local agencies may provide individual or group counselling at no or low cost.
If you’re not sure where to start, we’re happy to help point you toward appropriate resources.
5. Look for the Right Fit
Therapy is a personal relationship. What matters most is that you feel safe, respected, and understood. Here are some questions to consider when choosing a therapist:
Do they have experience with your area of concern?
Do you prefer a therapist of a particular gender, background, or faith?
Do their values or approach resonate with you?
Are they available at times that work for your schedule?
Do they offer virtual sessions, in-person sessions, or both?
At Gina King & Associates, we offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to help you decide whether we are the right fit for you. We take time to understand your needs and make thoughtful matches with our team.
6. Trust the Process — and Yourself
It’s okay if the first therapist you meet is not the right fit. Therapy is about relationship, and sometimes it takes a session or two to know what feels right. A good therapist will support you in making the best choice for your care — even if that means referring you elsewhere.
Begin When You're Ready
